Parenting Styles
There are 4 types of parenting styles.
The type of parenting style that you use will determine the emotional
climate in your home.
Authoritative
- Most effective method of parenting
- Open communication between parent and child
- Provides structure and routine
- Gives out consequences if rules are broken
Authoritarian
- Strict form of parenting
- Children are to follow a strict set of rules and
expectations
- Uses punishment as a method of teaching/training
- Children are prone to have low self-esteem and have
difficulty in social situations
Permissive
- Lacks structure
- Parents are lenient to avoid confrontation and act more
like a friend
- There are few rules, which are often inconsistent
- Children tend to grow up with little self-discipline and
little self-control
Neglectful
- One of the most harmful styles of parenting
- Parents are not involved in their child's life and are
unaware of what is going on
- Parents do not care for their child's emotional or
physical needs
- Children may have a harder time forming relationships
